Drivers in Rollingwood will have the slow down a bit following a City Council decision to lower the speed limit on part of Rollingwood Drive to 25 miles per hour.
While most of the thoroughfare will remain at the 30 miles per hour limit, a section of the roadway around Hatley Park will be officially lowered to 25.
The area currently has an advisory speed limit of 25, but the City Council’s decision makes speeding in the park zone a citable offence.
“People are already accustomed to the 25 mile per hour speed zone,” said Alderwoman Shanthi Jayakumar. “Now we just need to inform them that it is mandatory and not advisory.”
Under the City Council’s Feb. 15 decision, the park zone was expanded eastward to the Almarion Drive intersection. The western boundary of the park zone remains near the Edgegrove intersection. The measure passed 4-1, with Alderwoman Sara Hutson opposed.
The council also took some steps to examine further traffic calming measures on Rollingwood Drive.
In a 4-0 vote, with Hutson absent, the City Council voted to have city engineer Susan Smith draw up plans for bike lanes along the length of Rollingwood Drive.
In a 3-1 vote, with Hutson absent and Alderman John Hinton opposed, the council also asked Smith to draw up designs and recommendations for an additional stop sign, pedestrian cross walks and speed bumps in the park zone along Rollingwood Drive using traffic data from a previous study.
In other action, the council voted unanimously to extended a moratorium on front-yard fences until March 30. The moratorium has been in place since October while city officials examine existing ordinances and consider whether they allow front-yard fences or if further ordinances are needed in order to restrict them.
