A week after dropping its first regular-season duel in two years, Westlake responded by winning a trio of taut matchups.
The Chaps (5-1) capped a streak of three wins with a 10-5 win over Region III powerhouse Houston Clear Lake Saturday at Westlake High School. Raina Kishan continued her strong play last week with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Katherine Miller. The sophomore won three singles matches without dropping a set while solidifying her spot on the second line.
“Raina has moved quite nicely into the No. 2 position,” Westlake coach Kim Riley said. “She just keeps getting better and better each match. Raina isn’t just athletic; she is smart too. She can think her way through a match that others may not be able to.”
Because of that, Riley thinks that Kishan also forms a powerful combination with Casey Sutton on the top girls doubles line. The team went 3-0 last week, which included a 6-2, 6-2 win over Adriana and Marcela Ocon of Clear Lake.
“She and Casey are a tough No. 1 doubles team,” Riley said. “There are not going to be many teams that can beat them.”
Jacqueline Patterson added a win in girls singles play, and Robin Chou fought off three match points in a 7-5, 1-6 (13-11) win over Kevin Wang on the top boys line.
“That was unbelievable,” Riley said. “It was easily a college-level match.”
Ryan Meek, Nemo Niess and Derek Wang helped the Chaps sweep the top four boys singles matches in a duel that Riley called “closer than the final score.”
In fact, the Chaps were losing four matches at the time that Wang closed out the victory with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Smith Johnston.
Chaps show balance in wins over Westwood, Lake Travis
Westlake opened its week with a 13-6 triumph at Westwood Aug. 26. Westlake showed balance in the win, garnering five points from its boys contingent and seven points from its girls.
In addition, Camilia Childers and Sam Bell picked up a hard-fought point with a 7-5, 7-6 win on the mixed doubles line.
Sutton and Kishan highlighted the girls effort. Each won their singles matches without dropping a set, and they teamed for a 6-0, 7-5 win on the top line of the doubles bracket.
Niess picked up the 10th and decisive point with a 6-3, 6-0 singles win over Chad Griesbach, but the team of Wang and Tarun Palapati provided the most compelling point. After dropping the first set to Brian Ong and Joash Suryavanshi on the No. 2 doubles line, the pair rallied for a 6-2 win in the second set before claiming an 11-9 victory in a tiebreaker that determined the winner.
On Friday, the Chaps traveled to Lake Travis and escaped with a 10-7 win. Chou and Meek, the team’s top two boys singles players, proved the difference in the match with a pair of exciting wins. Chou rebounded from a wrenching loss in the first set for a 5-7, 6-3 (10-3) over Justin Archer on the top line. Meek, Chou’s doubles partner, then topped Conor O’Rourke in another tiebreaker 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).
Sutton, Kishan, Tara Sharma and Patterson added singles wins for Westlake’s girls, and Sutton and Kishan teamed for a straight-set win on the top girls doubles line. Allie Carlisle and Childers also picked up a girls doubles win.
