The American Cancer Society’s renowned Cattle Baron’s Ball was celebrated recently with this year’s theme of “Discover Your Inner Cowboy.”

More than 600 wranglers wore their Western wear of Stetsons and stilettos for a good ol’ time at the Four Seasons Hotel.

At sunset on the lawn by Lady Bird Lake, raucous revelers enjoyed casino games, armadillo races, video dove shoot, photo booth, silent auction and opening band Texas Renegade. Signature cocktails showcased a Cattleman Margarita by Cruz Tequila and el Jefe by Maker’s Mark.

Buffet trails of cowboy cuisine featured Mexican shrimp shooters, bacon-wrapped quail, King Ranch chicken, flat iron steak, and chipotle pork tenderloin. Dessert of s’mores was roasted over the open fire outside.

The masters of ceremonies were radio personalities Bucky Godbolt and Bob Cole from KVET 98.1FM. Auctioneer Daniel Kruse expertly led the exciting live auction. The conspicuous spotters donned oversized, yellow cowboy hats made of foam.

The biggest bidders were Chris Ellis, who purchased a longhorn bull calf; John and Marianne Kyger, who procured a private jet trip to the Eldorado Resort and Casino in Shreveport, La.; and Westbanker Bonnie Schieffer, who bought a five-bedroom home stay at Navarre Beach, Fla. Westbankers Vance and Brandi McMurrey won the largest item of a “Burning Ring of Fire” band and barbecue party.

The evening’s highlight was live music by Texas born, Grammy-nominated Tracy Lawrence. He has released eight No. 1 country singles. The rowdy crowd was boot-scooting and two-stepping all over the dance floor.

“I am proud to support a notable organization, and great fun was had by everyone, including our 100 volunteers,” said event co-chair Crystal Tidmore. “It was wonderful to see the community come together to raise money for a cause that affects everybody in some way.”

Proceeds generated $268,000 for ACS’s efforts to build a better future for cancer patients and survivors through research, education, advocacy and service. Funds will be directly allocated to local programs, transportation assistance and resource groups.
