• Moton Crockett Jr. has made volunteering a second career, having dedicated more than 45 years to serving others, and his spirited work recently earned him the Querencia at Barton Creek’s Salute to Seniors Award.

Robert Watson, president of the Austin Downtown Lions Club, nominated Crockett for the honor, saying Crockett personifies the mission of the Lions Clubs Organization and is “a genuine example for our community that volunteering can be lifelong commitment.”

At age 87, Crockett still continues to operate his own real estate properties, and has been in the industry for more than 60 years. He is a big supporter of the University of Texas, and was the director of the Longhorn Band from 1950-1955. He served as president of the local chapter in 1978. He continues to give back through monetary support for various causes, and each year around the holiday season, Crockett sells nuts for the Carl Widen Elementary School.

Crockett’s volunteer duties also include assisting children receive free eye exams and glasses for underprivileged children, as well as supply free summer camping experiences at the Lions Camp in Kerrville, Texas for handicapped children, and those with diabetes, hearing and vision disabilities.

The Querencia Salute to Seniors Award is presented quarterly to honor an individual who is making a difference in their community. Qualified nominees are active adults age 62 and above who volunteer their time and talents to their communities, and who also exemplify leadership, spirit and citizenship.

• Brothers Joe and Tim Dunn recently headed off to their respective U.S. Service Academies, the Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y., and the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn.

Joe is a 2009 Westlake graduate majoring in logistics and intermodal transportation, and Tim is a 2010 Westlake grad majoring in marine and environmental science.

The brothers, both former Chaps football players, will face each other as rivals Sept. 11 in New London, Conn., in the Dept. of Transportation vs. the Dept. of Homeland Security game.

• Rollingwood City Council will meet at 7 p.m. July 21 at City Hall, 403 Nixon Drive.

• Westlake High School freshman Sarah Nichols plays the lead in the Zilker Theatre Productions’ “Annie” on Thursday and Saturday evenings at Zilker Theatre through the closing the production on Aug. 14.

Nichols and local actress Jordan Morgan alternate playing the spunky, depression-era orphan determined to find the parents that abandoned her years before in New York City. Morgan performs on Friday and Sunday evenings.

Performances start at dusk, and admission is free. Parking cost is $3 per vehicle.
