As if Westlake’s boys golf team needed further proof of its frigidness under fire, its youngest member cooled off the field with a thrilling win at Austin’s Firecracker Open at Lions Municipal Golf Course.
Stratton Nolen, a freshman starter on Westlake’s Class 5A state championship golf team in May, won the title on a third playoff hole Monday. He ended the 36-hole tournament with a 68-68 136.
At 15, Nolen becomes the second youngest golfer to ever win the Firecracker Open, now in its 64th year on the historic links of Lions. Brenden Redfern, one of Nolen’s teammates at Westlake, was 14 when he won the Firecracker in 2007.
The win didn’t come without anxiety for Nolen, who had to outdual Jordan Wolff and defending champion Scott Roudebush in a three-man playoff. All three parred the par-4 first hole, but Wolff fell out of contention after parring the par-5 second hole.
Nolen then chipped onto the green and nailed a 3-foot putt for par on the par-4 third hole. Roudebush failed to clear the fringe on his chip, and his try for par fell well short, allowing a Chap to hoist the trophy for the second time in the past three years.
