Rollingwood-based Bean Brand Foods, makers of Beanitos bean chips, announced this week that it is launching two new flavors of the healthy snack chips.

The new flavors, cheddar cheese and chipotle barbecue, debuted at the Fancy Foods Show in New York City this week. The company currently offers black bean and pinto bean with flax flavors.

“We had several different new flavors that we were experimenting with, and these were by far the best,” said Doug Foreman, Bean Brand Foods chief executive officer.

The company, which launched in January, has seen some impressive sales in the first few months of operation. Its chips, which the company said are gluten-free, corn-free, low-glycemic, high-fiber, high-protein and a good source of Omeg-3 fatty acids, have landed on shelves at Whole Foods, H-E-B, Central Market and more than half a dozen other stores nationwide.

Foreman, who founded Guiltless Gourmet in 1989 and sold the healthy snack food company to Barq’s Root Beer in 1991, said that sales of Beanitos “are way beyond what we expected in the first year.”

Foreman said that he came up with the idea of the bean-based chips when he was researching low-glycemic diets.

“Corn and potato chips aren’t [low glycemic], so I started playing around in the kitchen again,” he said. “I just started tinkering.”

Austin is a great place to launch the unconventional snack because there is such a diversity of foods in the area, he said.

Foreman said he plans to keep the company’s offices in the Westbank area.

“Our rent is quite reasonable,” he said of the company’s space in the Palisades. “We will always call Austin and Westlake home. We love it here.”
