As expected, a record-setting school year for Westlake’s athletic department wasn’t enough to dethrone The Woodlands from its spot atop the Lone Star Cup standings.

Westlake finished the Class 5A competition with 94 points, which gave the school its highest total since the UIL created the competition in 1997.

The Woodlands tallied 100 points to claim its third consecutive Lone Star Cup and fourth in school history.

Westlake’s total topped the school’s previous best mark of 90 set in 2007 and 2009, and it provided a particularly rewarding end to athletic director Darren Allman’s first year in the Eanes school district.

“The special year is a result of a lot of committed student athletes and coaches,” he said. “Our athletes are very competitive, and they expect to win championships. Our coaches are committed to supporting the total athletic program, and I think we have the best coaching staff in Texas.
“Our success is also the result of an administration that values athletics as a part of the total education in Eanes.”

Allman also said Westlake’s showing in the competition confirmed one of his reasons for moving to the Westbank. When Allman accepted the offer to serve as the Eanes athletic director and Westlake’s head football coach last year, he specifically cited the school’s ability to compete for Lone Star Cup titles as an enticement.

“The success that we have had across the board is what makes this place really special,” he said. “It is very difficult to excel in the majority of sports on a regular basis. Westlake is a great place to compete and a great place to coach.”

Since its inception 13 years ago, the Lone Star Cup has provided the state’s only comprehensive measurement of a high school’s cumulative success in athletics, academics and other extracurricular activities. The competition awards points based on district titles and playoff success in all UIL-sanctioned sports. In 2009-10, the Class 5A competition also compiled results from the state academic meet and the one-act play contest.

State-tournament showings by Westlake’s volleyball, swimming, boys soccer and golf teams – including a state title by both Chaps’ boys and girls golf squads – helped the school finish with its most points in school history. In addition, the Chaps’ football team reached the state championship game.
Tennis player Russell Bader won the Class 5A boys singles title at the spring state tournament, but the UIL only recognizes the fall’s team tennis season when compiling points for tennis.

With its top-10 finish, Westlake added to its status as one of the state’s most successful programs. The school has finished in the top 10 since the competition’s inception and won the 2002 Lone Star Cup with 84 points.

Humble Kingwood finished third with 80 points, while Southlake Carroll placed fourth with 60 points. Flower Mound Marcus (60 points), Houston Bellaire (56), Katy Cinco Ranch (56), Klein (54) and Fort Bend Clements (51) completed the top nine, while Bowie, Pearland and Plano West tied for 10th with 50 points.

For Westlake’s District 25-5A rival Bowie, the point total gave the South Austin school it’s first finish in the top 10.

  1. Chaps grandma says:

And credit Lisa Schlimgen for her excellent support for all of Westlake’s athletic teams in 2009-2010 and in the preceding 20+ years.

It’s a disgrace that Coach Allman ended such a successful year by forcing Lisa to resign.

  2. can't listen to this anymore says:

It’s a disgrace that so many people jump to conclusions (”forcing Lisa to resign”) without knowing the entire truth.

  3. can't listen to this anymore says:

And on a POSITIVE note (which is not common on these threads), a big congrats to the Chap athletes and coaching staffs for making this a very memorable year for Westlake high school. I know it doesn’t seem like it, but there are still plenty of us that support the coaching staffs and athletes. I, for one, am very proud to be a part of one of the most well rounded and respected athletic programs and schools in the state.

  4. Yes, the truth is disgraceful. says:

“can’t listen” … If you “can’t listen”, can you read the documents? Lisa was indeed forced to resign.

  5. truth or consequences says:

    Good job athletes!
And to those who ‘can’t listen anymore’, might I suggest you start reading the public documents instead. The truth is just too darn inconvenient for some to acknowledge.

  6. get a life says:

Please quit tryin to be an expert on personel decisions that take place at school. Unless you have been there every day and know everything going on inside their program, you don’t know the truth either. If you really wanted to know the truth, you would get out from behind your computer and go speak to the people involved. If you have a problem with it, quit hiding behind your computer and go speak to the person you have a problem with. I’ll bet there’s not a soul in the athletic department that would be intimidated by your cowardly remarks. They seem to be way more worried about getting our kids to a high level. That’s what they are paid to do- not to make you happy.

  7. Happy says:

get a life … you didn’t share your identity. Westlake HS coach perhaps?
