After helping Westlake’s boys soccer team to its first state tournament in a generation, a trio of seniors earned postseason recognition from the Texas Association of Soccer Coaches.

Forward Dillon Short, who set a new single-season school record with 27 goals in 2010, received a spot on the Class 5A all-state first team. Goalie Dylan Shomaker, a South Florida commit, joined Short on the first team after recording eight shutouts and a .75 goals-against-average.

Midfielder Bailey Hinners, a George Washington commit, earned all-Region IV recognition after tallying 11 goals and 14 assists.

In addition, first-year Westlake coach John Campbell received one of TASCO’s four selections for Class 5A boys coach of the year honors.

The Chaps finished the season with a 19-6-3 record, the District 25-5A title and the program’s first state semifinal appearance since 1983.

Meyer, Noonan draw honors

Westlake’s girls soccer squad had two players recognized by TASCO.

Freshman Hannah Meyer capped a sterling debut season by earning a spot on TASCO’s all-state second team. The defender, who started all 27 matches for the Chaps, also received first-team all-Region IV recognition. She anchored a defensive unit that gave up just seven goals while winning the District 25-5A championship.

Sophomore midfielder Katharine Noonan claimed second-team all-regional honors after compiling 17 goals and 15 assists for 49 total points.

The Chaps finished 2009 with a 20-8-2 record and spot in the regional championship match.
