To the victor go the spoils – at least when it comes to the distribution of the District 25-5A postseason awards from the district’s coaches.
Westlake swept the honors after winning 25-5A for the fifth consecutive season. The Chaps, which finished the year with a 24-12-1 record and a spot in the second round of the playoffs, ended their district slate with a 11-3 record.

Chap senior Chris Watkins received the Most Valuable Player honor after shining at the plate and on the mound. He hit .341 with 16 RBIs and scored 23 runs in the regular season. Watkins also led the Chaps’ pitching staff with a record of 9-1 in the regular season and 63 strikeouts. He tallied an ERA of 1.73 and had seven complete games in nine starts.

Sophomore outfielder Lewis Guilbeau picked up Newcomer of the Year recognition after a sterling debut that included a .466 batting average, 39 RBIs and four home runs. He also scored 25 runs and stole 10 bases.

Veteran skipper Jim Darilek had one of his most impressive campaigns in 16 seasons at Westlake while earning Coach of the Year honors. He had to replace eight graduates from last year’s state-tournament lineup in addition to both starting pitchers. The 29-year coaching veteran has been on Westlake’s staff since 1983.

Three Chaps were named to the all-district first team by the 25-5A coaches. Senior Miles Hanson earned a selection as a pitcher after leading Westlake with 58 innings on the mound and posting a team-best ERA of 1.69. He earned a 5-2 record while fanning 29 and issuing just seven walks. Hanson also hit .385 with 17 RBIs and played first base when not on the mound.

Junior catcher Robert Baldwin also picked up first-team honors after hitting .295 with 18 RBIs. Classmate Collin Shaw, the lone returning starter for the 2010 Chaps, also received a first-team spot by hitting .333 with four home runs and scoring a team-best 33 runs. The centerfielder led Westlake with 15 stolen bases in 16 attempts.

Senior shortstop Jon Darilek (.266 batting average, 10 RBIs, 15 runs) garnered second-team honors.
