An action-packed mixture of golf, comedy, celebrities, awards, parties and fundraising were all part of the recent 31st annual Lone Star Classic. This unique two-day event included many Westbankers, counting the half that comprises the Lone Star Paralysis Foundation board.
The founder, president and host emeritus is Westbanker Doug English, a former all-American defensive tackle at the University of Texas and all-pro player for the Detroit Lions. Other Westbank board members are Kelly Sharp, Jack Ranney, Erik Liljenwall and Steve Bartholomew.
A pre-party kick off was thrown at the El Arroyo “Ditch.” Hundreds enjoyed a Mexican food buffet, spirited karaoke and the Al Waldrep scholarship raffle for an iPad.
The golf tournament was held at the Onion Creek Country Club the next day for 180 players. A six-man scramble showcased one celebrity team member like Pat Green, Major Applewhite and Jody Conradt or Westbankers David McWilliams, Eric Holle and Britt Hager. Westbankers Brion Cimino and Will Petty, owners of Cookwell & Co., provided the food.
The banquet and comedy show was sold-out at the Four Seasons Hotel. More than 500 partygoers mingled during a cocktail reception sponsored by Twin Liquors, Glazer’s and Tito’s Vodka. A delicious dinner featured beef tenderloin and crab cakes.
An impressive auction included a trip to San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, tickets to a Dallas Cowboy game plus an Emmitt Smith autographed football and meals at the Westbank restaurants of Gumbo’s, Las Palomas or Dragon Gate.
An awards presentation was an anticipated surprise. The 10th Annual Carlyn Nelson “Here’s the Deal” generosity award was given to Jack Gilmore. The sixth Annual Everest volunteer award went to Jared Dunten.
Six-time host and world-renowned comedian Bill Engvall entertained the crowd, along with comedians Jamie Kaler, Gary Brightwell, Al April and Chris Bliss.
“The Classic was an incredible combination of great fun and serious fundraising,” two-time event chair Tom Lange said. “We are gratified by the enthusiasm and philanthropy of our supporters and the amazing advocates of Westlake.”
Proceeds generated more than $300,000, which includes new equipment for the Brain and Spine Recovery Center at UMC Brackenridge Hospital in Austin.
