Sawyer Morris, a 2010 Westlake graduate, capped his high school career with a dominating performance at the recent Texas State Greco Roman and Freestyle Wrestling Championships at the University of Texas- Arlington.

In an event that featured almost 1,000 competitors, Morris won gold in the 160-pound class in both the freestyle and Greco-Roman division. Morris won all of his matches by pin or tech nical fall. Morris finished the season with a 38-0 record.

The wins at UTA automatically qualified Morris to represent Texas as a member of the Texas National Team at the national championships in Fargo, N. D., in July.

“It is truly an honor to represent Texas,” Morris said. “Over the next seven weeks, I will train extremely hard and smart, to bring back a national championship to Westlake.”

Morris will compete against the top 100 wrestlers at 160 pounds from all 50 states. Morris won All-American honors earlier this year when he finished third at the preseason nationals in Iowa.

Morris will wrestle for Indiana University in the Big 10 Conference in the fall.
