An inspired Akins squad spoiled Senior Night for the Westlake with a 5-4 win Friday, but the result mattered little in the big picture.

The Chaps (21-10-1 overall, 11-3 in district) secured the District 25-5A title a week before, and they still enter this week’s playoffs as the district’s top seed.

Westlake will face San Antonio Madison in a best-of-three Class 5A Region IV bidistrict series beginning Thursday at 7 p.m. at Blossom Athletic Center in San Antonio. Game two will take place at Westlake’s Woerner Field Friday at 7 p.m. A time and place for game three has not been determined, if needed.

Although Akins (11-16, 4-10) finished seventh in district play, the Eagles showed plenty of fight at the plate. They touched Chap starter Chris Watkins for three runs in their first at-bat, and they scored the winning run in the top of the seventh inning.

Watkins (9-1) suffered his first loss of the season, but he didn’t get much help from a Chap defense that committed two errors.

Chap centerfielder Collin Shaw paced a nine-hit Westlake attack with his third home run of the season.
