Although the Chaps closed out the regular season with a win over Akins Friday, a 4-1 setback to Austin High April 20 proved costly.

The defeat secured District 25-5A’s fourth seed and a first-round meeting with No. 6 Smithson Valley for the Chaps. Westlake coach Haley Gaddis won a coin flip for a single-game series, which will take place Friday at 7 p.m. at Texas State University in San Marcos.

Smithson Valley, the defending state champions, won District 26-5A and boast an overall mark of 22-1-2. However, Westlake fought the Rangers in a playoff-series loss in 2008 that included a 1-0 10-inning defeat.

According to Westlake senior Hannah Slovacek, a member of the 2008 Chap squad, her team enters this matchup better prepared for a win.

“That Smithson Valley team had three awesome players, and we were young,” she said. “This year, they’re decent but not great. And we’re a better team. I think we can win.”
