Plans are in the works for Champions Westlake, a gymnastics and cheerleading school, to move to the Shops at Mira Vista shopping center in Rollingwood.

When the school moves from its current location on the property of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, the gym will be one of the largest of its type in the area. Rollingwood city leaders are hoping the new addition to the city’s major shopping center will drive traffic to retailers and restaurants.

“We’re looking forward to it,” said Rollingwood Mayor Dale Dingley. “They currently have about 600 students and that could bring a lot of people into the center.”

With the move, owner Gretchen Huddleston said, the size of the school will increase to 14,000 square feet, more than triple the space the business currently has. That extra space means room for more students and more classes.

The school currently teaches gymnastics, tumbling and cheer classes to ages 18 months to 18 years. With the move, Huddleston said, she hopes to expand to college age students and adults and to begin teaching dance and exercise classes.

“There has not been a large competitive cheer program in the area and so many people have had to drive miles out of their way to get that,” Huddleston said. “We couldn’t compete before, but with this move, it puts us on equal footing.”

The size of the space, which is located next to Sprouts, and its convenient location near Mopac and Bee Cave Road made it ideal, Huddleston said.

“We had really outgrown our space and I started looking for a new location about five years ago,” she said. “We wanted to stay in the heart of Westlake, and this was almost a perfectly prescribed space.”

Champions Westlake will also expand their hours to include more daytime and weekend classes and will add kid’s night out and birthday parties to the its offerings. It will include a retail and pro shop.

The business still has to get approval from the Rollingwood Planning and Zoning Commission and the Rollingwood City Council for a special use permit for the space it is planning to lease.
