Bolstered by one explosive inning, Anderson refused to give up its long shot at the District 25-5A title without a fight.

The Trojans (19-10 overall, 8-4 in District 25-5A) scored all of their runs during the second inning in a 5-1 win over Westlake at Woerner Field Tuesday. The result prevented the Chaps (20-8-1, 10-2) from clinching a fifth consecutive district crown, but Westlake still controls its own conference fate. The Chaps need just one win or an Anderson loss in the final two games of the regular season to secure the 25-5A title.

Westlake and starter Miles Hanson needed a tourniquet in the top of the second inning against the Trojans, who collected five of their seven hits in the stanza. A two-out, two-run double by outfielder Andre Wheeler that gave his team a 5-0 lead did the most damage.

“They [the Trojans] are playing really well now, and we gave them a five-run inning,” Westlake coach Jim Darilek said. “That should never happen. Miles made some poor pitches, and we didn’t make a couple of plays. They weren’t errors, but they still were plays we should have made.”

After that frame, Hanson and the Chaps settled down and made plenty of plays. Hanson gave up just one more hit in the game and didn’t walk a batter in the complete-game effort. Troup Evans had a splendid game at the hot corner, Jon Darilek dazzled at shortstop, and centerfielder Collin Shaw robbed Anderson’s Jeff Arnold of an extra-base hit with a diving over-the-shoulder catch in the seventh inning.

But none of those plays could help the Chaps rough up Anderson pitcher David Paiz. The Texas Tech recruit allowed four hits and had nine strikeouts without a walk in a complete-game win.

“We were hitting the ball pretty well, but we just didn’t get anything to fall,” Chap outfielder Lewis Guilbeau said. “Give him [Paiz] credit, because he pitched a good game.”

Guilbeau and Hanson each had two hits, but no other Chap could handle Paiz’s pinpoint control.

“He [Paiz] threw better than he normally does,” Darilek said. “He’s usually a little wild, but he had good control tonight. And we helped him out by swinging at some bad pitches.”

A trio of Anderson errors helped Westlake get the leadoff man on base in five of the innings, but the Chaps could only take advantage in the fourth. Jon Darilek reached base on an error and stole second base. Guilbeau then drove Darilek home with a hard grounder that skipped through the infield.

“We talk about this all the time: When they do something good, we have to answer and turn that momentum,” Jim Darilek said. “We did not do a good job of that tonight.”

The Chaps face Austin High Friday at 7 p.m. at Burger Center.
