A slap hit by Davis Breedlove and some heady baserunning by Jon Darilek helped Westlake (8-3 overall, 1-0 in district) emerge with a 1-0 win in taut District 25-5A opener against Bowie Tuesday at Woerner Field.

Westlake pitcher Chris Watkins and Bowie sophomore Robby Dickey engaged in a spirited pitcher’s duel that typified the rivalry between the longtime district foes.

Watkins gave up just two hits and had 12 strikeouts in the complete-game win, but Dickey matched that shutout effort for almost seven innings. Dickey departed the 0-0 game with one out and the bases loaded for Breedlove, who trickled a hit down the first-base line. Darilek sprinted off the bag and beat a throw to home to end the game.
