As Westlake’s Samantha Tucker toed the starting block at the 100-yard freestyle at Saturday’s Class 5A swimming championships, she had more than a chance at a fourth consecutive state championship in the event.
The Chap senior also had a chance at redemption.
Tucker ended with both by winning gold in a blistering 49.83 seconds. The victory not only added to an impressive prep medal haul for Tucker, but it eased the pain of a third-place finish in the 200 freestyle, an event in which Tucker owns the state record.
Tucker also anchored Westlake’s 400 freestyle relay team, which won gold in a time of 3:36.90. MacKenzie Franklin, Ruth Norval and Maddie Edwards teamed with Tucker in the event that capped the two-day tournament Saturday at the Joe Jamail Swim Center on the University of Texas campus.
Those two wins gave Tucker a total of 11 gold medals at the state meet in her high school career, including six individual golds. The University of Texas recruit has 13 total medals in four appearances at the state meet.
The 200 medley relay team of Edwards, Jenny Thomas, Norval and Franklin finished fifth in 1:46.79, and Edwards finished 12th in the 100 breaststroke.
As a team, Westlake’s girls finished seventh overall with 109 points. Kingwood won the meet with 167 points.
On the boys side, Reed Snyder placed fourth in the 500 freestyle while setting a new school record with a time of 4:29.18.
Matthew Ellis placed fifth in the 100 butterfly in 49.30 seconds, and the 200 medley relay of David Cox, Paul Corbae, Ellis and Eric Dirvin clocked a time of 1:36.72 to place sixth.
Matt Ellis, Reed Snyder, Adam Shedlosky and Dirvin placed fifth in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:05.92, which set a new school record.
As a team, the Chaps tallied 83 points to finish seventh. The Woodlands won the meet with 225 points.
