Westlake’s long voyage to the Rio Grande Valley last weekend produced plenty of positives beyond a resounding win, according to Coach Chuck Nowland.

It offered an in-depth look at the Los Lagos Golf Course in Harlingen, which will serve as the site of next month’s regional tournament.

It provided a sturdy set of foes, including San Antonio MacArthur and Smithson Valley.

And it also gave the squad an abundant amount of team bonding as the bus rolled across the vast South Texas plains.

“And we passed the road-endurance test of more than six hours in each other’s company,” Nowland quipped.

The top-ranked Chaps spent plenty of time in each other’s company near the top of the leader board while rolling to a team score of 306-301 607, which was more than 20 strokes ahead of second-place Smithson Valley.

Mariana Sims fired four birdies in the second round and finished with a winning score of 74-73 147, which beat teammate Kaylin Terry’s second-place score of 76-73 149. Terry had three birdies in the second round.

Haley Haught finished the course with two consecutive birdies and a 74-79 153, which tied the Westlake junior for third place.

Taylor Moreno also placed in the top 10 for Westlake, which has won all seven of the tournaments the team has entered this season.
