With the best prep girls golf teams in Texas assembled for a preview of the state meet, Westlake made a powerful statement about its chances this spring.
The top-ranked Chaps rode a balanced attack to a first-place score of 319-306 625 at last weekend’s Pre-State Invitational at Jimmy Clay Golf Course in Austin. Paced by a fifth-place score of 152 from Taylor Moreno, Westlake had four players fire under 160 on the course that hosts the Class 5A state meet in May.
“We are playing the course [Jimmy Clay] with a lot more confidence and commitment,” Westlake coach Chuck Nowland said, eyeing a return to Clay in a few months. “The greens were hard, the ground conditions challenging. That will all change over spring as things warm up, but the basic sight-lines and targets at Clay remain the same.”
Haley Haught shot an 82-75 157 to finish second for Westlake. Mariana Sims (79-79 158) and Kaylin Terry (81-77 158) also finished in the top 16.
Carly Berryhill completed Westlake’s team score with an 86-83 169.
The Woodlands finished second with a team score of 627, and Christine Lin of Westwood won individual honors with a 75-75 150.
