Students in the Eanes school district seem to have learned the true meaning of doing for others. In the weeks following the devastating earthquake in Haiti, students in six of the district’s schools have organized fundraisers to help survivors build a new world.

At Hill Country Middle School, a student band called Swagger gave a concert Friday during the advisory period and charged $1 admission to be donated to Haiti relief efforts. They raised $279.33 for the American Red Cross Haiti Fund.

Across the district at West Ridge Middle School, students raised more than $650 for The Lemonade for Haiti Fund. Several area local businesses also contributed, allowing them to turn the money raised on campus into $2,292, which will be donated to the Red Cross fund.

Younger but no less dedicated, elementary school students at Forest Trail drew a large outline of Haiti on their cafeteria floor for open house activities last week. Parents and children at the school tried to fill the map with money for Haiti, resulting in a $2,180 donation that was sent to the International Rescue Committee. Third-graders at Bridge Point Elementary School raised $950 through their fundraising effort Hearts for Haiti. They donated the money to the Bush-Clinton fund.

The Cedar Creek Elementary School student council did a Coins for Haiti fundraiser, and several small groups of students at the school also held lemonade stands. Proceeds from the efforts totaled $1,090 and were contributed to the Red Cross. Valley View Elementary School fifth-graders made tiny house magnets and sold them at a recent Bingo Night, raising $301. The proceeds will be donated to OXFAM for the rebuilding of Haiti. Valley View third- and fourth-graders will continue the tiny house project.

“ I am always impressed by the innovative fundraising ideas that our students develop to help those in need and am extremely proud of their initiatives,” district Superintendent Nola Wellman said. “This type of community service also provides students with valuable opportunities for life lessons.”
