Girls basketball: Churchill a young but scrappy first-round foe
Tuesday, February 16, 2010 |
Westlake (27-6), which enters the postseason on a 10-game winning streak, hopes to stay hot against an unseasoned but salty San Antonio Churchill defense in a Class 5A Region IV bidisrict playoff contest tonight at Seguin High School.
The playoff opener begins at 7 p.m.
Churchill (21-14) finished third in District 26-5A behind a stifling defense that makes for a lack of scoring punch. The Chargers have held their past seven foes to an average of 36.9 points per game and thrive in a halfcourt game.
Sophomore guard Jordan Holub, a gifted athlete who also thrives as a setter in volleyball, leads the team with 12.3 points a game. Freshman Carly Truesdale starts alongside Holub in the backcourt and averages 10.6 points a game.
Truesdale has been on fire in recent weeks, averaging more than 20 points a game in the past four contests.
Churchill returns to the playoffs for the first time since advancing to the Class 5A state tournament in 2007.
