Both the Westlake girls and boys swim teams won District 25-5A championships Saturday at the Jamail Swim Center on the University of Texas campus.
Samantha Tucker earned Swimmer of the Meet honors while helping Westlake’s girls tally 153 points. Bowie finished second with 119 points, and third-place Anderson accumulated 94 points.
Tucker, a senior committed to the University of Texas, won both the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events.
Other individual winners for Westlake’s girls included Maddie Edwards in the 200 individual medley and Ruthie Norval in the 100 butterfly. The girls 200 medley relay of Norval, Jennie Thomas, Sarah Southworth and Bayley Wiltshire also won gold.
Westlake’s other medalists included Mackenzie Franklin, third, 200 freestyle; Lindsey Regan, third, 500 freestyle; Norval, second, 100 backstroke; Catherine Ann Prideaux, third, 100 backstroke; Edwards, second, 100 breaststroke; and the girls 400 freestyle relay of Franklin, Regan, Wiltshire and Tucker, second.
The top-six finishers for the girls will also travel to the Region VII meet in San Antonio Feb. 12-13, including Thomas (fourth, 50 freestyle and fourth, 100 breaststroke); Southworth (fifth, 50 freestyle and fifth, 100 butterfly); Wiltshire (sixth, 50 freestyle and sixth, 100 freestyle); Olivia Muelhberger (fourth, 100 butterfly); Margaret Beck (sixth, 100 backstroke); and Mara Weidman (sixth, 100 breaststroke).
Ellis paces boys to win
The boys rolled to first place with 196 points behind a strong performance by Swimmer of the Meet Matt Ellis, who won both the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly events.
Eric Dirvin won the 200 individual medley, Reed Snyder won the 500 freestyle and Wes Thomas won the 100 breaststroke. In addition, the 200 freestyle team of Ellis, Adam Shedlosky, David Cox and Dirvin won gold, as did the 400 freestyle relay team Matt Ellis, Lucas Belury, Chad Bohls and Snyder.
The boys medalists also included the second-place 200 medley relay team of Cox, Thomas, Shedlosky and Dirvin. Other top-three finishes included Snyder (second, 200 freestyle); Shedlosky (third, 200 individual medley and third, 100 freestyle); Dirvin (second, 100 freestyle); Mattias Glenesk (third, 500 freestyle); David Cox (second, 100 backstroke); and Paul Corbae (second, 100 breaststroke).
Other top-six finishers and regional qualifiers include Bohls (fourth, 200 freestyle); Lucas Belury (fourth, 200 individual medley and fourth, 100 butterfly); Luke Brennan (fourth, 50 freestyle and fifth, 100 backstroke); Nick Lesenco (sixth, 100 freestyle); and David Gutierrez (fifth, 100 breaststroke).
Bowie finished second with 100 points, and Anderson placed third with 77 points.
