Westlake High School art and photography students walked away with the show at a recent Texas Regional Scholastic Art Awards Contest at St. Edward’s University. The Scanlan Gallery at St. Stephen’s Episcopal School will honor winning students at an exhibit that runs Jan. 24-Feb. 5.

“This event has always been one of our major shows because of the national implications,” said WHS art teacher Dale Baker. “Each year we have one or two students who pick up a national award and are recognized with a reception and award ceremony at Carnegie Hall in New York.”

WHS Gold Key winners were: Adrienne Arredondo, Indigo Colton, Alyssa Creagh, James Lambrecht, Jason Najm, May Sembera, Alex Chang and Ian McCurley.

Gold Key Art Portfolio winners were: Alyssa Creagh, May Sembera, Adrienne Arredondo and Indigo Colton.

Silver Key winners were: Alyssa Creagh, May Sembera, Katherine MacDonald, Cameron Abshire, Sofia Proffitt, Katherine Jones, Christine Meyer and Kathryn Heimsath.

Certificate of Merit winners were: Hirrah Barlas, Michelle Ling, Zelda Mayer, Leila Farhood, Steven Wilbanks, Natasha Helms, Natalia Russell, Marie Larochelle, Jane Wells, Katherine MacDonald and Lily Patterson.

Baker credited district teachers for the historical success of WHS students in the competition.

“I think the entire art staff does an excellent job of preparing our students; it is not just one or two teachers,” he said. “Each teacher has an influence on the students as they go through the program. Having great students who work hard to achieve their goals doesn’t hurt. If you look at our overall scores last year in individual interviews with a judge 95 out of 105 of our students made perfect scores.

“I think the work reflects their efforts and the judges can see that in their work.”
