With a record-setting performance that left the rest of the state’s elite reaching for second, Westlake confirmed its status as the team to beat in Class 5A.
The top-ranked Chaps, the defending Class 5A champions, shot a tournament-record 586 at the Aggie Cup Invitational and cruised to a 13-stroke win Monday and Tuesday in College Station.
The victory against a field that included all the top-10 teams in both classes 4A and 5A did more than add another tournament trophy to the Chaps’ collection, according to Westlake coach Callan Nokes.
“It showed us and everyone else that if we continue to work hard, we should put ourselves in a great position to defend our championship,” he said. “We have six or seven players on this team capable of playing on almost anyone’s first team, so it is going to be a huge battle just to make our first team. That should keep everyone sharp as it did last year.”
It didn’t take more than one round for the Chaps to make a statement. Led by an under-par round of 70 from gold-medalist Brenden Redfern, Westlake shot a team-course record 293 Monday at Traditions Golf Course.
That score gave the Chaps a 19-stroke lead over Southlake Carroll and San Antonio Reagan and provided plenty of cushion for Tuesday’s 293 round at Miramont Golf Course.
Mansfield finished second with a 599, and Carroll placed third with a 608.
Redfern, who shot a 70 in both rounds, won gold by five strokes over Greg Yates of Mansfield.
Dallas Jesuit’s Jordan Spieth finished third with a 76-70 146.
Westlake’s Stratton Nolen (72-75 147) and Alex Ellis (75-72 147) tied for fourth, and Daniel Northington (76-79 155) tied for 18th.
Paul Otte completed Westlake’s team score with a 46th-place score of 88-76 164.
The strong performance of the freshman Nolen stood out in a field consisting of a multitude of proven veterans, said Nokes.
“Stratton has come in and proven he is a very talented player,” Nokes said. “He makes very few mistakes and drives the ball very, very well. He has made an immediate impact, and I believe will be an outstanding player all four years at Westlake.”
