A story on the front page about three Hill Country Middle School seventh-graders, who happen to be triplets, is an indication of what a little inspiration can do. For Elise, Nathan and Sophie Kunik, their inspiration to help build a high school in Kenya came in part from attending the premiere party for Westbank resident Turk Pipkin’s new film, “One Peace at a Time.” But good deeds apparently run in the family since their older brother, ninth-grader Julian, raised $5,000 in 2007 to help put electricity and water into the St. Joseph Mahiga School in Kenya.
Clearly, these students are wiser than their years, and they could be a great example for others who may feel that they can’t possibly make a difference in a world so filled with problems. Pipkin knows better, however, and continues to make significant strides toward what he hopes will be a snowball effect toward similar success stories.
The young people featured in the story were bright enough to hear the truth in Pipkin’s film and understand that small steps can lead to giant strides toward helping people with needs most of us can’t even imagine.
The message behind “One Peace at a Time” is fairly simple: We can make a difference.
