Westlake defensive backs coach Jeff Joseph may add a few hours to a long workweek, and it’s not because Katy Cinco Ranch will suddenly abandon its run-based offense.

Joseph previously coached at Katy Seven Lakes – one of Cinco Ranch’s district rivals – before joining the Westlake coaching staff in the spring.

Joseph’s familiarity with Cinco Ranch extends into his childhood. Joseph’s father, Gary, served as a longtime assistant coach at the dynastic Katy High football program before taking over as head coach in 2003, and Jeff Joseph played for Katy in 1999 and 2000. Cinco Ranch head coach Don Clayton worked as Katy’s offensive coordinator before taking over the fledgling Cinco Ranch program in 2000 and even coached former Katy quarterback Jeff Rhoads, who is now the Chaps’ offensive coordinator.

“They [Cinco Ranch] basically run a similar system to Katy, so we’ll be spending a lot of time talking to Jeff this week,” Westlake coach Darren Allman said. “I know Jeff talks to Gary all the time, so we’ll see if we learn something.”

If the Chaps defeat Cinco Ranch and advance to the Class 5A Division I state championship game in San Antonio Dec. 19, it may lead to a football family reunion of sorts.

Gary Joseph and Katy will advance to the 5A Division II title game if they defeat New Braunfels Saturday. The Division II title game follows the Division I contest at the Alamodome, and the crowd will likely include Gary’s father Eddie Joseph, a Westlake resident and a Hall of Fame coach and longtime executive director of the Texas High School Coaches Association.
