No surprisingly, Westlake finished second in the final Class 5A volleyball poll released by the Texas Girls Coaches Association.
The Chaps fell to top-ranked Amarillo in five games in the state championship match Nov. 21 and ended the season with a 39-7 record.
In his comments about next season, pollster Butch Hart expressed doubt about Amarillo’s ability to win a fifth consecutive title.
“I love the Sandies but even I don’t think they can five-peat,” he wrote. “Graduation hits everybody this year. Early guess is teams from Arlington ISD and Greater San Antonio will rise up and be joined by one of the Fort Bend schools or Katy schools. Really wide open in 5A.”
Amarillo may not get a chance to defend its 5A crown. The rumor mill surrounding this winter’s biennial UIL realignment has the Sandies dropping to Class 4A.
