In a dress rehearsal for next month’s postseason meets, both Westlake’s boys and girls finished in the top five at the 74-team Texas Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association North swim meet in Dallas Nov. 20-21.

The boys placed third behind Plano and Southlake Carroll at Loos Pool behind a strong showing from its relay teams. The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Matthew Ellis, Reed Snyder, Lucas Belury and Eric Dirvin finished third. Ellis, Adam Shedlosky, David Cox and Snyder took third in the 200 freestyle relay, and the 200 medley team of David Cox, Wes Thomas, Shedlosky and Dirvin finished fourth.

Dirvin finished third in the 200 individual medley and fifth in the 100 freestyle, while Ellis took fourth in the 100 butterfly and sixth in the 200 freestyle. Shedlosky finished eighth in the 100 freestyle, Snyder placed fourth in the 500 freestyle and ninth in the 200 freestyle, and Cox took seventh in the 100 backstroke.

Relay teams helped Westlake’s girls place fifth. Mackenzie Franklin, Maddie Edwards, Bayley Wiltshire and Ruthie Norval finished sixth in the 400 freestyle relay, and the 200 medley relay of Norval, Olivia Kirkpatrick, Edwards and Jenny Thomas finished seventh.

Franklin, Thomas, Wiltshire and Sarah Southworth finished eighth in the 200 freestyle relay.

In individual action, Franklin finished seventh in the 100 freestyle, and Norval placed sixth in the 100 backstroke.

Westlake will next compete in its district meet Jan. 29-30.

Tucker, McDermott represent Westlake at FINA meet

In international action, Westlake’s Samantha Tucker and Amber McDermott represented the United States on the junior team in the FINA World Cup series in Stockholm Nov. 10-11 and Berlin Nov. 14-15. The prestigious meets featured a combined 20 world records, but the Chaps fared well against the world’s best competition.

McDermott finished third in the 800 freestyle in Stockholm with a time of 8 minutes, 24 seconds, and she and finished fourth in the 400 free style in Berlin in 4:03. Tucker finished ninth in the 200 freestyle in Stockholm with a time of 1:56.9 and 10th in the same event in Berlin.

The competition was held in short-course meters.
