Westlake’s girls basketball team enters tonight’s home game against Waco with a 3-3 record and several injuries.
Point guard Cherrell Mays broke her nose in practice earlier this week and will miss at least tonight’s game, said Chap coach Keith Smith. She will be fitted with a mask and could play next week. Rose Minutaglio will likely hand the bulk of the point-guard duties.
In addition, guard Hannah Coley has played this season but hasn’t fully recovered from an off-season knee injury, said Smith. Post Jackie Manzano has also missed the first two weeks of the season and will likely be out at least another month.
Tonight’s contest offers a quick rematch with a Waco team that handed Westlake a 56-50 loss last weekend at the Temple tournament.
After a season-opening 52-51 loss to Round Rock Nov. 10, the Chaps won three of five games at the Temple tournament. Courtney Duever had 12 points in a 54-38 win over San Antonio Taft and 14 points in a 54-27 victory over Kerrville Tivy. Duever also had 17 points and 11 rebounds in a 50-41 victory over Killeen.
Westlake fell to San Antonio Marshall 63-57 to finish sixth in the tournament.
