For the second straight match, Westlake rallied from a slow start for a resounding playoff win.
The Chaps reached the regional tournament for the ninth consecutive year with a 23-25, 25-16, 25-13, 25-14 victory over Corpus Christi King in a Class 5A Region IV quarterfinal matchup Tuesday in Floresville. Westlake (36-6) will face San Antonio Southwest in a regional semifinal Friday at 8 p.m. at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio.
With a win, Westlake will meet either San Antonio O’Connor or McAllen Rowe at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s. State-ranked O’Connor, which upset No. 1 San Antonio Reagan in the regional quarterfinals, is a heavy favorite to advance to the regional finals.
Sara Shaw continued her torrid playoff pace with 27 kills against a salty King squad that ended its season 35-5. She also added four blocks and four aces. The 6-foot-1-inch Westlake outside hitter has 71 kills in three playoff matches.
The Chaps needed Shaw’s offense after King clawed out a win in the first game and raced to a 9-5 lead in the second set. Shaw keyed a 20-7 Westlake run, however, as the Chaps reversed the momentum of the match.
Paige Caridi had 14 kills and just two hitting errors on 33 swings and added a dozen digs. Kenzie Hume and Ella Praisner each had five kills.
Avery Edwards (30 assists) and Amanda Welsh (23) assists directed an offense that tallied 59 kills on 41-percent hitting.
