Westlake’s girls finished a few spots short of making the Class 5A state meet.

Led by sophomore Ashley Maton, the Chaps tallied 274 points to finish 10th at the Class 5A Region IV meet Saturday at Brooks Air Force Base in San Antonio. Mission Sharyland won the meet with 154 points, while Del Rio (155 points) and Corpus Christi Carroll (179) finished second and third, respectively, to reach this week’s state meet.

Bastrop, which finished third behind Westlake and Bowie at the District 25-5A meet, finished fifth with 236 points, while Bowie fell to 18th.

Maton finished 19th in 12 minutes, 9 seconds on the 2-mile course to lead Westlake. After a significant gap between Chap runners, Kate Travis placed 150th in 12:53.5. Ariana Oliveira (261st, 13:01.9), Amanda Hillary (288th, 13:16.9) and Amy Kasahara (291st, 13:19) completed the scoring for Westlake.

Gabriela Salazar of Pharr-San Juan-Alamo edged Austin High’s Rachel Baptista by a 10th of a second for individual honors with a time of 11:19.3.

Boys place 20th at regionals

Westlake’s boys finished 20th at the regional meet with 469 points.

LaJoya Palmview won the meet with 84 points. Carroll (second, 118 points) and Edinburg North (third, 121 points) also qualified for this week’s Class 5A state meet.

Matt Ballou finished 56th on the 3-mile course in 17:10.5 to pace the Chaps. Robert Waguespack (98th, 17:46.1), Andrew Stockton (113th, 17:57.6), Nick Maass (135th, 18:19.9) and Nick Domino (147th, 18:33.9) completed Westlake’s score.

Jacob Benn of San Antonio Stevens won the race in 15:22.7.
