The Gold Star program for senior citizens, an Eanes school district idea that gives senior citizens free admission to school events and a discount for community education classes is again being offered to local citizens.

The district offered the program in the past, and those old Gold Star cards are still honored. New cards are now being issued on request.

“The Gold Star program is a positive way to connect with a segment of our population that may not have frequent interaction with our schools,” said Superintendent Nola Wellman. “We know that our schools and students have been involved in various types of outreach to the senior community; this is a district-level opportunity to enhance that connection.”

To qualify as a Gold Star member, a senior citizen must be a district resident at least 65 years old. Gold Star cardholders will be sent a calendar of major events at the beginning of the school year. Cards will admit the bearer to events at schools free of charge. Seating at most events is general admission. For major events, including Westlake varsity football games, Gold Star members should request and pick up tickets in advance. For some events, a Gold Star performance will be designated on one particular date for ticketing purposes. Seating may be limited for some events.

Gold Star cardholders will also receive a 10 percent discount on district community education classes.

To request a card, residents may either stop by the reception desk at the Eanes Central Administration building at 601 Camp Craft Road, or call 732-9001.
