My Fit Foods is coming to the West Woods shopping center in the vacant space next to Trip to Bountiful Bakery.
The Houston-based healthy meal company plans to open its first Austin store Saturday, offering simple, fresh, ready-to-go meals for busy Westbankers. Personal fitness trainer Mario Mendias started the food store to offer people healthy alternatives to fast food.
“You are what you eat, and food is more responsible for how you feel than you know,” he said.
Medias said all the food on the My Fit Foods menu has low glycemic carbohydrates that the body does not store as fat, uses meat that is 90 percent lean or leaner and is designed to fuel metabolism and burn fat. All menu items are free of preservatives and never frozen.
Customers go online, order breakfasts, meals, fruits, snacks and special waters ahead of time and pick them up at the local store. Meals come in varying sizes and range in price from $6.50 to $11.
My Fit Foods plans to open a second Austin location at 42nd Street and Lamar in November. Austin regional manager Scott Watson said the company decided to expand out of its Houston market area and into Austin because there is a demand for healthy eating here.
“The Austin population is health conscious and looking for an alternative to the prepared food that is out there right now,” he said. “Healthy food should be available to everyone, no matter who you are. It should be simple. You take it home, throw it in the microwave for a few minutes and it’s ready.”
