With postseason play beginning next week, Westlake continued to answer the few remaining questions about its team.
In the process, the Chaps (15-0) have continued to demolish some of the better teams in the state, including a win over District 25-5A rival Austin High Thursday.
One of those preseason questions – a girls contingent relying heavily on freshman – helped power the Chaps to a 10-2 win over regional rival San Antonio Reagan Saturday at Westlake High School. Freshman Meredith Hopson gritted out a 7-5, 6-0 win over Chelsea Horan on the top line, and the freshman team of Sydney Young and Raina Kishan rallied for a pivotal 6-7, 6-1 (10-3) win on the second line of girls doubles play.
“The young girls have really come through big a couple of times,” Coach Kim Riley said. “They could have just folded after the first set, but they didn’t and came all the way back.”
Of course, Westlake’s boys put on a typically dominant display. Russell Bader, Robin Chou and Chris Dale all picked up singles wins without dropping a set. The teams of Bader and Alex Durham, Dale and Charlie Shin, and Chou and Jay Henton all won doubles matches.
Such success continued a season-long trend. Westlake’s boys have lost just six of 126 matches this season.
Shin win caps triumph over Cavs
Westlake warmed up for its win over Reagan with a 12-1 triumph at Lake Travis Friday. Shin picked up the 10th win with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over B.G. Slay on the fifth line of boys singles.
Team tops Trojans in district preview
The Chaps beat visiting Anderson 16-3 Oct. 1 in what Riley said could be a preview of the District 25-5A tournament finals. Westlake’s girls won all but one of their matches. Hopson, Young and Kishan all swept up 8-0 wins on the first three lines of girls singles play.
The district tournament begins next week. The top-seeded Chaps, who received a bye through the first two rounds, will host either Bastrop, Connally or Austin High Thursday afternoon at a time not yet announced.
