Rollingwood’s crime rate hit record numbers this summer. It was the first time in recent history that the city went a two full months without a break in or burglary.

The streak was broken on Sept. 5, when Rollingwood officers nabbed two alleged thieves stealing compact discs out of a parked car.

“One of our officers was on patrol and spotted a vehicle at the Chevron station with the door open and no one around,” Pryor said.

The officer arrested and charged Loren Daniels, 26,, and Whitney Williams, 25, with burglary.

“The past six months we’ve been very vocal about what people need to do,” said Chief Dayne Pryor.

This means keeping valuables out of sight and doors locked, on both homes and vehicles.

“We had a case where a woman had left her purse on the counter and the thief went in through an unlocked door and took it while the family was asleep,” he said.

Part of the police effort to educate citizens involved putting notes on cars where police saw valuables out in plain sight, urging residents to be more careful. But even with their increased efforts, Pryor says he isn’t ready to take credit for the drop in crime.

“I really can’t say why, because the cities around us are still getting hit very hard,” Police Chief Dayne Pryor said. “The citizens are becoming more aware and we’ve become more visible but I’m just as surprised as everyone else. Even with your best efforts there is always a few.”

While he remained humble, Mayor Dale Dingley lauded the city’s police force.

“I would say that it’s in all likelihood due to the diligence and hard work of our police department that resulted in those who were committing the crimes no longer being around,” he said, adding that they were “knocking on wood” for the streak to continue.
