After an impressive nondistrict win over Round Rock Aug. 25, the Chaps couldn’t carry that momentum into last weekend’s Pearland tournament.
Westlake (18-5) dropped two of six matches while finishing 11th. The two setbacks – to College Park (17-25, 25-22, 25-15) and Round Rock (19-25, 25-21, 25-12) – proved particularly galling to Coach Al Bennett.
“We shouldn’t have lost those matches, and that’s three that we shouldn’t have lost this season,” he said, also referring to an earlier defeat to Leander. “We still have some things to work on.”
The Chaps topped Sugar Land Dulles 25-17, 25-13, Jersey Village 20-25, 25-18, 25-13, Klein Collins 25-11, 25-18, Garland Sachse 25-19, 25-14 and Highland Park 25-16, 27-25.
The return of Sara Shaw from an ankle injury provided a silver lining for the Chaps in the otherwise disappointing tournament. The 6-foot-1-inch outside hitter, who has battled an ankle injury for the entire season, fired a team-high 50 kills with just seven errors while playing in just nine games at the tournament.
Paige Caridi also had a strong tournament with 41 kills and 49 digs in 17 games, while Ella Praisner added 31 kills in 15 games.
Katie Sorenson played big at the net with 24 kills and a dozen blocks in 15 games.
The Chaps return to action Friday at 6:30 p.m. against visiting Dripping Springs.
