Pieces to the Puzzle: Quarterbacks
Friday, August 28, 2009 |
Despite spending years learning Westlake’s old pro-style offense, senior Tanner Price hasn’t stumbled while climbing the learning curve that comes with a new system.

The 6-foot-2-inch signal caller received his scholarship offer from Wake Forest University based on his ability to riddle defenses from the pocket. This season, however, expect Price to unveil a new weapon as Westlake switches to a base shotgun spread offense.
“In this system, the quarterback has to run,” Coach Darren Allman says. “And Tanner can definitely move. He’s physical, and he’s athletic. We think his scrambling ability makes him special.”
Indeed, Price has bulked up to 205 pounds, and that added muscle should help him earn some tough yards on the ground.
Price’s best attribute remains his arm, and a crop of new receivers shouldn’t lessen the impact of the all-district quarterback. A year ago, Price led the district with 2,326 yards and 20 touchdowns on 61.2-percent passing. He added seven touchdowns and 113 yards on the ground.
Junior Preston Dewey will back Price up. He competed four of nine passes for 26 yards in limited action last year.
Sophomore Lewis Guilbeau has impressed coaches with his versatility, and will see action under center, at running back, and at wide receiver.
