With Westlake’s football season just a month away, the community has already begun preparation for the start of the Chaps’ newest era.
Westlake High School will host Kickoff, a festive blend of a carnival and football scrimmages, Aug. 15 at Chaparral Stadium. The event will feature plenty of family fun and offer a sneak preview of the 2009 Chaps and first-year coach Darren Allman, who took over the program in February after the retirement of Derek Long.
Scrimmages for the junior varsity and varsity begin at 8:30 a.m., and the carnival follows from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
This year’s team baskets featured in a silent auction include hunting and fishing (including a fishing guide) and a Best of Austin basket that includes a three-day pass to the Austin City Limits Music Festival in October.
Entertainment at this year’s Kickoff will include performances by the WHS, West Ridge and Hill Country middle school cheerleaders, Austin Jugglers, Drumline, a pie-eating contest and a performance by Austin’s Hula Hoop Lady that includes the senior football players.
The carnival will feature outdoor games, including a dunk tank, where you can test your skill at dunking the football coaching staff, as well as an indoor game area and food court located in The Chap Court, offering Gatti’s Pizza, Chick-fil-a, Thundercloud Subs and Smoothie King, with Hat Creek Burger Company hamburgers and snow cones located outside.
Season tickets still available
Season tickets are still available for Westlake’s 2009 football season.
Season tickets will go on sale Aug. 6 at 8 a.m. in the athletic office at Westlake High School. Tickets sales hours are 8 a.m. -noon and 1:30-3:30 pm. Season tickets will be sold up until the first home game, which is Sept. 11 against A&M Consolidated. Call 732-9289, ext. 1 for more information.
All tickets are reserved for Westlake varsity football games. The only exceptions will be for WHS students, who will be able to purchase student tickets at school and at the gate with a valid student ID, and for Hill Country and West Ridge middle school students, who will be able to purchase tickets for the “Pit” (the end zone section for middle school students) both at their middle schools and at the game with a valid middle school student ID.
With the increasing number of elementary students attending varsity football games and concerns for safety and security of those children, Westlake officials are continuing their policy of purchasing a reserved ticket for that elementary student to sit with an adult. All elementary students will need to be accompanied by an adult, and there will be no student tickets sold to elementary students.
