A record-setting round helped Westlake’s Eli Juren finish tied for 11th at one of the most prestigious youth tournaments in the nation.

Powered by a junior course record 6-under par 65 in the third round, Juren ended the Western Junior Championship at the University of Texas Golf Club with a 72-hole total of 6-over 290. He shot a 77 in the first round, followed by a 74 and the 65. The Westlake junior capped the tournament with a 74 in Saturday’s final round.

Zack Fischer of Wake Village, a Northeast Texas hamlet just west of Texarkana, became the third consecutive Texan to win the tournament with a 3-under 281.

Cody Gribble of Dallas and Houston’s Cory Whitsett won the tournament in 2007 and 2008, respectively.

Juren’s score led all Central Texans, but he had company from his prep teammates on the leader board.  Paul Otte and Alex Ellis, who teamed with Juren to help the Chaps win the 2009 Class 5A state championship, finished with a 297 and 298, respectively.
