Westlake’s boys doubles team of Russell Bader and Alex Durham showed plenty of grit while winning the tournament title at the Kemah Boardwalk Invitational Saturday.

Bader and Russell won five matches without dropping a set, but a semifinal win over Houston Clear Lake provided enough adversity in the first set alone. The top-seeded Chap duo had to fend off two set points in that opening set to scratch out a 7-5, 6-3 win. Bader and Russell then trounced Katy Taylor’s top team 6-2, 6-3 in the finals.

Westlake’s Sydney Bell, the third seed in the girls singles bracket, reached the finals before losing to top-seeded Abby Hayley on The Woodlands.

Other Westlake results include: Taylor Schumacher, 19th in girls singles; Mikayla Waters and Molly Laycock, 29th in girls doubles;  Sidney Tucker and Andie Ingram, 25th in girls doubles;  Chris Tan and Drew Weinstock,19th in boys doubles; Tara Sharma and Ben Williamson, 10th in mixed doubles; Jonathan Tan and MC Romano,12th in mixed doubles;  Jay Henton, 11th in boys singles; and David Joseph, 19th in boys singles.

Westlake will compete in the District 25-5A spring tennis tournament April 7-8 at the University of Texas Intramural Fields courts.
