A walk-off home run by Westlake shortstop Mackenzie Whyte downed Austin High Friday and helped the Chaps seize sole possession of third place in the District 25-5A race.
Whyte’s two-run shot in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Westlake (16-9-1) a dramatic 6-5 win in a game moved from Butler Field in Austin to Westlake High School because of Friday’s rain. The victory lifted the Chaps to a 4-2 mark in district play and knocked Austin High (7-11) to 3-3 in district.
Whyte’s dinger was just one of two hits for Westlake, but the Chaps took advantage of three Maroon errors and a handful of base-on-balls to slug their way to a win.
Elena Reynolds, who relieved Westlake starter Hannah Slovacek in the circle in the seventh inning, earned the win.
