Hannah Slovacek fanned a dozen batters as Westlake broke a tie for third place with a 6-1 home win over Anderson Tuesday.
The Chaps (15-9-1 overall) improved to 3-2 in District 25-5A, while Anderson dropped to 2-3 in district.
A four-run Westlake response to Anderson’s lone run keyed the win. The Trojans cut Westlake’s lead to 2-1 on an unearned run in the top of the fifth inning, but the Chaps quickly answered with a double by Adriana Martinez. After Martinez scored on a Trojan error, Mackenzie Whyte smoked a two-run homer into the trees behind the centerfield wall to give Westlake a 5-1 lead. Rosie Maddox then doubled into left-center and scored on a double by Slovacek.
The Chaps opened the scoring in the first inning when Elena Reynolds, Whyte and Maddox all reached base on three consecutive bunts. Slovacek then drove a ball deep to score Reynolds.
Whyte added a run in the third inning on an Anderson throwing error.
