SAN ANTONIO – The Class 5A Region IV tournament turned into a banner event for Westlake, which set new school records by qualifying eight grapplers for the state tournament, including four individual champions.

Westlake got a game-tying goal from Shannon McShane just 33 seconds into the third quarter, but the Chaps couldn’t hang on and fell 8-5 in their home opener to powerful Houston Strake Jesuit on a chilly Saturday afternoon at Chaparral Stadium.

The Westlake rugby faithful sat under a low cloud ceiling in Houston last Saturday and, in the waning minutes of a suspense-filled match, watched the Chaps’ first side lose a heartbreaker 20-18 to a powerful Strake Jesuit team.

Westlake wasn’t able to keep up its record pace Saturday, but the Chaps were still able to shoot the lowest winning score since 2003 at the 2009 Lauren Johnson Memorial girls golf tournament.
