Westlake’s girls and boys contingents each won their divisions of the District 25-5A swim meet Friday and Saturday at the Jamail Swim Center on the University of Texas campus.  

The Chap girls were led by junior Samantha Tucker, who was named District 25-5A’s Female Athlete of the Year after winning both the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events in record time. Tucker lowered her own school record in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:45.34 minutes and the 100 freestyle in 49.24. She also anchored both the second-place 200 freestyle relay and the winning 400 freestyle relay.

With 162 points, the girls easily outscored second-place Anderson and third-place Bowie. Contributing to the win on the girl’s side was the winning 200 medley relay team of Ruthie Norval, Camille Hendrix, Sarah Southworth and Julie Gutierrez. Tucker teamed with Katie Scarsella, Catherine Anne Prideaux and Southworth on the second-place 200 freestyle relay. Hendrix, Norval and Prideaux joined Tucker on the winning 400 freestyle relay. 

Lindsey Regan took the bronze medal in both the 200 individual medley and the 500 freestyle. Hendrix and Scarsella were silver and bronze medalists, respectively, in the 50 freestyle. Both seniors will also advance to regionals in the 100 freestyle. Norval and Gutierrez were silver and bronze medalists, respectively, in both the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke.

The boys won with 166 points to outpace second-place Bowie and third-place Anderson. 

A pair of underclassmen highlighted the Chaps’ winning effort. Freshman Matt Ellis won both the 200 individual medley and the 100 butterfly, while sophomore Eric Dirvin  won the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle. Dirvin lowered his own school record in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:42.98.  

Ellis and Dirvin also teamed with Niklas Glenesk and Adam Shedlosky to win the 200 freestyle relay. Ellis, Glenesk, Reed Snyder and Dirvin won the 400 freestyle relay. 

The 200 medley relay of Snyder, Shedlosky, Dominic Medina and Nick Lesenco took second place. Shedlosky took silver in the 200 individual medley and bronze in the 100 butterfly. Glenesk was placed third in both the 200 and 100 freestyle events, and Snyder took the Silver medal in the 200 and 500 freestyle races.

Freshman Paul Corbae won the 100 breaststroke.

Westlake advanced 24 swimmers to the Region 7-5A meet at the Josh Davis Natatorium in San Antonio Feb. 13-14. Joining the medalists listed above will be qualifiers Bethany Corbae, Lucas Belury, Grace Cheney, Luke Brennan, Mara Weidmann, Chad Bohls, Jenny Thomas and Mattias Glenesk.
