LAKEWAY – In a testament to its depth, Westlake’s Blue team rolled to the title at last week’s Lake-apalooza golf tournament at Falconhead Golf Course despite not having anyone place in the top five.

The Chaps tallied a two-round score of 341-341 682 to win the event over second-place Lake Travis by 22 strokes. Jenna Stene (90-80 170), Haley Haught (89-82 171) and Taylor Moreno (80-92 172) placed sixth through eighth, respectively, to pace Westlake.

Carly Berryhill (93-87 180) finished tied for 17th for the Chaps. Teammate Kaylin Terry, who shot an 82 in the first round, had to withdraw with an illness.

Coupled with the blustery mornings at the Jan. 19-20 tournament, Terry’s illness provided an added challenge to his team, Westlake coach Chuck Nowland said.

“It was a good test, and we all gained from it despite the hardships and illnesses,” he said.

Westlake’s Red team placed 11th with a 405-424 829. Meg Healy and Kaitlyn Bennett led the squad by a 202.

Boys place second at A&M

The combination of a rugged field, blustery conditions and some uncharacteristic struggles on the greens kept top-ranked Westlake from winning a tournament for the first time this season.

The Chaps still finished with a second-place score of 326-318 644 at the third annual A&M Consolidated Tiger Spring Invitational Jan. 19-20 at Miramont Country Club in College Station. Brenden Redfern shined while finishing second with a score of 79-71 150.

“Brenden played great, [but] we just didn’t do a very good job on the greens, and obviously we could have handled the windy conditions better,” Westlake coach Callan Nokes said. “I think we will learn from it. In some ways, I’m glad we got beat so we will stay motivated to play their best in the future.”

Houston Memorial won the event with a 324-309 633. Cody Gribble of Highland Park won individual honors with a 75-74 190.

Westlake’s Trent Redfern placed 15th with an 84-80 164, and teammate Alex Ellis finished 19th with a 81-87 168.

Tim Mitchell (88-80 168) and Eli Juren (82-87 169) completed the Chaps’ team score.
