BASTROP — In a game pushed up 1½ hours, Westlake held off a pesky Bastrop team to earn an 83-71 win at Bastrop High School.

The loss puts Bastrop’s playoff hopes in dire jeopardy as the Bears (7-18, 1-7 District 25-5A) cannot lose another district game and still make the playoffs. And Bastrop is still going to need some help.

Tuesday, the Bears couldn’t get to the free-throw line as much as the Chaparrals.

Westlake (20-5, 6-2) shot 36 free throws and scored 25 points from the free-throw line.

Bastrop only shot 18 and made 13 of those attempts.

The Bears even outrebounded the Chaps 33-26 with big man David Womack pulling down a game-high 13 boards to go with seven points.

“We made a couple of mental mistakes there that kept us from getting a good swing of momentum,” said Bastrop head coach Justin Hardin. “They’d miss, and we would pass the ball out of bounds or make a soft pass. But you have to give it [credit] to them. They are good.”

Westlake had four players score in double digits with Conner Kemper scoring a game-high 23 points, followed by Cliff Houston and Cody Doolin, who scored 15 points apiece.

Houston made five three-pointers, all in the first half, as the Chaparrals took a 46-37 lead at halftime.

Bastrop came fighting back and moved to within three points midway through the third quarter on a 7-0 run by the Bears.

Daryl McFarlin put Bastrop to within five points at the end of the third quarter.

Westlake extended its lead back to seven points early in the fourth quarter, but Josiah Monroe made 4-of-6 free throws in three straight trips to the free-throw line to pull the Bears back to within three points.

Monroe finished the game with a team-high 22 points, while E.J. Fleming added 16.

Bastrop tried to mount a comeback late in the quarter, but the Chaparrals made 13 of 16 free-throw attempts in the quarter to seal the win.
