GEORGETOWN – Westlake found life at the annual Governor’s Cup difficult while battling injuries, absences and the top-ranked team in the state. The Chaps went 0-2-1, but it should become another stepping stone for improvement, said one of the side’s key players.

“It was a tough weekend with injuries and other reasons for people not being there but I’m proud of the guys for fighting through even when they were tired,” senior captain Jackson Widner said. “This is just going to make us stronger for the actual season.”

The Jan. 15-17 tournament took place at Georgetown High School and featured some of the best teams Texas has to offer. The Chaps’ first game ended in a 2-2 draw against Deer Park. The team then fell to top-ranked The Woodlands 4-2 Friday and 2-1 to Atascocita Saturday.
