Rollingwood Drive will soon have striped lanes to discourage speeding.

The Rollingwood City Council passed the project during it’s meeting on Nov. 19.

Rex Klentzman is an engineer with Bleyl & Associates, the engineering firm that developed the striping project.

Klentzman said two 11-foot driving lanes will encourage drivers to maintain control and regulate their speed without feeling too restricted.

When there are no striped lanes, drivers tend to feel like they have the road to themselves and drive faster than the speed limit, Klentzman said.

The lanes will discourage this.

“It’s kind of an interesting psychology,” Klentzman said. “It works with drivers’ psyche.”

Reflectors will be installed in the middle of the stripes for the winding parts of Rollingwood Drive.

The project includes 7-foot-wide striped medians in the center of the wider parts of Rollingwood Drive and a shoulder for parking.

Alderwoman Sara Hutson said she would rather have the median space added to the shoulder.

“If it’s down the middle of the road, you can’t use it for anything,” she said. “Seven feet just seems wasteful.”

Alderman Brian Nalle made a motion to pass the project contingent upon an engineer deciding whether the extra space should be striped in the median or added to the shoulder.
