It only took one game to see how much things have changed for Westlake’s offense.

Last season, the Chaps had more passing yards than rushing yards just once. But Friday, junior quarterback Tanner Price shook off a sore ankle and riddled Cedar Park’s secondary for 202 yards on 13-of-21 passing while Westlake’s running game picked up 120 yards.

Of course, Price quickly pointed out his two interceptions when analyzing his performance.

“We made some mistakes,” he said. “We had plenty of opportunities, but we didn’t capitalize. We just didn’t get in the end zone.”

Price did alleviate concerns about Westlake’s downfield passing game. He connected with Mike Walker three times for 77 yards and a touchdown while averaging 15.5 yards a completion. Price also found tight end Stephen Dawkins four times for 52 yards.

In contrast, Westlake’s tight ends averaged just 1.7 receptions per game a year ago.

“It was a little nerve-wracking, but it was a good experience,” Price said. “I can’t wait for the next game.”

District favorites fall

District 16-5A appeared to settle an ongoing Central Texas debate for at least one week.

In three head-to-head matchups between Austin’s two Class 5A districts, 16-5A emerged with three wins over a trio of highly touted 25-5A teams. Cedar Park topped Westlake 31-21, Class 5A newcomer Vista Ridge beat defending 25-5A champion Bowie 30-28, and Leander defeated 2007 state finalist Pflugerville 24-17.

News and notes

Senior safety Michael Perkins had an impressive game with nine tackles, a forced fumble and an interception. … Linebackers David Durham and Bryce Hager each had three unassisted tackles to lead Westlake. … Reserve quarterback Blake Brown missed the game with an injury.
