Quarterback Tanner Price remained questionable for Friday’s opener against Cedar Park with an injured ankle. If Price can’t play, Coach Derek Long said that the Chaps will likely rotate reserve quarterbacks Preston Dewey and Blake Brown.
The two backups split time with Westlake’s starters in Saturday’s scrimmage against Round Rock McNeil after Price went to the bench. They both earned praise from Westlake’s coaches.
“Our goal was for them both to get experience with the first team, and they did that,” he said. “I thought that they did a real good job. They both made some throws, and they both moved the offense.”
Brown, a 6-foot-1-inch, 170-pound junior, fired an 8-yard touchdown pass to tight end Stephen Dawkins on a slant pattern. He ended the scrimmage with 32 yards and completed five of eight passes.
Dewey, a 6-foot, 170-pound sophomore, completed three of six passes for 110 yards and had a 70-yard touchdown pass to Mike Walker. He also threw a pair of interceptions.
“We’d probably rotate them in if Tanner can’t play and go with the hot hand,” Long said.
